We’ve been really busy lately, and that has delayed getting this episode out. Rebecca and I took time to record something last night and post it this morning. Rebecca’s really come on board with the podcast, and I highlight some of her awesomeness. In fact, she has secured yet another interview opportunity with a band coming to Vancouver, so we make that announcement as well as discuss the new avenues that RadioZoom is exploring.

Being part two of my one year anniversary in Vancouver, we can’t get through this episode without doing some Vancouver Trivia, no matter how much Ubercaster messes up on us. I have to say, I’m really amazed with how much I have learned about this city in the past year. We also take a moment to get to some feedback that we’ve received from listeners.

Be sure to check out the ever changing website for RadioZoom. The “RZ Blog” has been added and will feature updates about the podcast. Also check out the “Episode Archive” to see a list of every episode of the podcast that is available.

RZ to interview Sparta at their Vancouver appearance

Sparta (credit: Johnny Buzzerio)Sparta has confirmed with us to do an interview during their one night appearance at Richards on Richards in Vancouver, B.C. We’ll be taking the recording gear with us to meet the guys before they take the stage this weekend. Checking their MySpace page, the show appears to be sold out, but count on us being there.

It should be an exciting night, and we are looking forward to meeting the guys for a relaxed discussion about the band, the tour, and whatever the hell we want to talk about otherwise. Look for this episode to be published by early next week.

Be sure to thank Rebecca, the resident RadioZoom PR babe, for getting this hooked up.

Changes to the RZ website

I’ve been doing a lot of tweaking to the RadioZoom website lately. Those who surf in to check out the latest from the podcast might notice that, from time to time, the site was completely screwed up. It’s ok. I have everything under control… for the most part.

I’m not sure how useful this feature will be, but I am attempting to do more blogging on this site in addition to the published of audio and video content. This will be an effort to keep you informed about changes, ideas, and other tidbits regarding RadioZoom in the future.

Most importantly, this is a test of the newest area that I have created on the website, the RZ Blog. You can always add the same feed that you use to listen to my podcasts into your RSS reader of choice so that you get all of this information on a regular basis. Think of it as a great way to also keep tabs on when the next podcast is released.

I know it’s been over a week since the last podcast, but I’ve been hard at work with programming the site. It’s like my eyes have been opened up to the powers of PHP and WordPress, so I’m experimenting with making this more than a website for serving up podcasts and looking like a blog. Look for something yet this week, probably before this weekend.

Aberdeen City w/Electric Six - Interview

This episode goes mobile as Rebecca and I spend some time with Aberdeen City before they take the stage at Richards on Richards in Vancouver. They were in town on October 17, 2006 on their North American tour, opening up for Electric Six. Answering an email that Rebecca sent them, they arranged for us to be on the guest list and hang out in the green room before the show started.

We get into a variety of topics, including life on the road, their brief time in Vancouver, what it’s like to tour with Electric six, and so on. The whole atmosphere is very laid back and unscripted. You get to hear the whole interview from beginning to end, with only minor editing to make all the segments flow together. Call it what you want, but this is podcasting. There are no rules. (FYI: some explicit language is used in this episode)

On a technical note, this is my first time using Levelator in an episode. This was very useful with the raw audio that I recorded of the interview. I’ve been impressed with what it can do and recommend checking it out for yourself.

RZ#115 – Six Song Donut Spectacular: October 2006; Miss 604 Take Over

I am no longer a podcast virgin. I took over all aspects of RadioZoom for Episode #115 as John sat in the wings, being a very gracious co-host, podcast mentor and trainer.

The focus was on the Boston-based band Aberdeen City since I’ve been invited to interview them [miss604] before their show here in Vancouver on Tuesday October 17th. I then selected pod safe artists (from music.podshow.com) who all hail from Boston, MA to keep with a bit of a theme and tribute to my old stomping grounds.

I hope you enjoy and PLEASE leave us some feedback; comments, concerns, rants, raves.

RZ#114 – One Year in Vancouver; The Crazy Canucks podcast; Sounds of the SkyTrain; 1907 Film of Downtown Vancouver

I haven’t done anything like this in quite a while, so I decided to take the minidisc and lapel mic with me as I had some things to take care of yesterday. It has been one year since I moved to Vancouver, so I talk a little about what the whole experience has been like. I also hesitate to say that this is the official, one year episode as Rebecca wants to do some recording on the topic as well. A second part might materialize soon.

I also talk about the new podcasting project that I launched this past week. The Crazy Canucks is an extension of the “Hockey Talk” segment from this podcast, but check out the website to get more of the story. Also, I had the opportunity to partake in a project regarding the oldest, surviving film footage of Vancouver from 1907.

A Skype interview with blogger J.J. Guerrero from the Canucks Hockey Blog, Rebecca and I learn more about the guy behind the blog, why he loves the Vancouver Canucks, and gather some insights about the team. The other interesting thing to note about J.J. is that he worked at GM Place for about nine years as an usher. He has a lot of knowledge about the team other that just loving the guys like we do. We don’t spend a lot of time setting up the episode because it really speaks for itself. If you dig hockey, then you’ll really enjoy this one.

Back to the studio, Rebecca joins me for an episode that we are squeezing in before a busy weekend starts for the both of us. My birthday is coming up on Sunday, and we’ll be attending the Canucks game againt Anaheim in celebration. We get into a variety of topics, including Vancouver Trivia as my one year anniversary in Vancouver is quickly approaching.

As you will learn in this episode, we were crunched for time as we were getting ready to see Snow Patrol in concert a few hours after recording this. Check back to these show notes in case I forgot to add something at the time of posting this. I’ll do my best to update later if I have.

RZ#111 – Six Song Donut Spectacular: September 2006; Farewell to WOXY.com

WOXY.com ends a long running history of being one of the best sources for alternative, independent music today. In this six song(plus two), I pay my respects to one of the greatest radio stations, terrestrial and internet-only, to have ever existed. All songs in this episode were artists that I discovered through WOXY, tracked down, and received permission from.

Today marks another page in rock and roll history. Septmber 15, 2006 will forever be the day that the music stopped, for good, from WOXY.com. Even if it begins again, it will never be the same as it ever was.

RZ#110 – Vandigicam Flickr Group: Portrait Throw Down Meetup

I was invited to join the Vandigicam Flickr Group on their “Portrait Throw Down III” meetup that gathered in English Bay on August 30, 2006. Vancouver photographer, Rachael Ashe, contacted me with the idea that this event that she was leading would make for interesting podcast material. The location and people apart of the group were an excellent setting for documenting what a Vandigicam gathering is like. Rebecca joined me but participated in the photo-festivities while I ran around with a microphone. Yet another adventure into the people that make up Vancouver, and here is a portion of those people who share a passion for getting behind the lense.

I would love to have linked to everyone’s Flickr accounts that I met at the meetup. Gladly and unfortunately, there were just way too many people to recall nor would it be fair to list the few people I do recall while forgetting the rest. If you were there, feel free to post a comment with a link to your photos. Regardless, it was great meeting everyone!
