For the last 18 years the New Music West festival has been a centerpiece for independent music, musicians, and industry professionals in Vancouver.

I was able to contact Jory Groberman from 29 Productions (the folks who made New Music West possible for the last few years) and chat a bit about what’s in store. What’s also pretty cool is that they’re handing me a media pass for the event(s) so watch for more announcements and coverage in the month ahead.

Sparta @ The CommodoreMan do we ever love a good rock show. When I heard Sparta was coming back into town I immediately arranged another interview. Not only are we huge fans, but the guys in the band are so talented and down to earth. A couple of weeks later, the band rolled through town and played none other than the Fabulous Commodore Ballroom here in Vancouver. Jim Ward, subject of our last interview, was under the weather but when we went back stage and saw Keeley and were not disappointed. It was great to talk to the latest member of the band, contributor on their new album Threes, hear about his side projects and impressions of our fair city.

RZ To Interview Sparta at Their Upcoming Vancouver Show

Sunday, March 18th, 2007 | Comments (0) »

Sparta @ Richards on Richards

We’ve done it before and we’re doing it again. We’re really happy to announce that we’ll be interviewing Sparta at their upcoming show at the Commodore, March 30th. It was such a pleasure to meet Jim Ward last year. He’s very intelligent, insightful, opinionated (in a good way) and sure can belt out the tunes.

Last November we had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Ward from Sparta for our podcast, RadioZoom [Episode #118][Miss604 Blog Post][RZ Blog Post].

You can check out the archived episode and if you like what you hear, either Jim’s point of view, his like of sushi or yes - the tunes - then you’re in luck. Sparta is coming back to Vancouver on March 30th, playing the Commodore [HOB]. I know a lot of people were upset that the last show at Richards on Richards sold out so quickly so here’s your chance.

Friday March 30th, 2007 @ The Commodore Ballroom - Tickets $17.50
- with guests, Moneen and Attack in Black.[Miss604]

Check out Episode #118 to hear our last interview with Jim Ward, and for more RadioZoom band meet n’ greets browse our “Interview” category. If you haven’t yet picked up their new album Threes I highly recommend you do so as well.

The Cloud Room Email Interview

Friday, December 8th, 2006 | Comments (0) »

As a follow up to John’s original post [The Cloud Room Needs Your Help] about the fire in lead singer J’s apartment, I decided to dig a little deeper and get in touch with J myself. The following is cross posted from my blog, [Miss604.com: Interview with J from The Cloud Room] and talked about on Episode #121.

Miss 604: I know The Cloud Room’s been crazy-busy over the last year: releasing your album in 2005, tours in Australia, Canada, US, festivals (SxSW), TV (talk shows, MTV, MuchMusic, etc.) … When did you get back home and have some downtime?

J: Back in March we had recorded two new songs (”Lord, I’m Tryin’” and “Eleanor F.”) and figured we just keep recording our 2nd album patchwork-style. We thought we were in for a long respite in June after our 6 months of touring ended in Australia. (more…)

Jim Ward of SpartaAnother adventure with the podcasting project, RadioZoom gets the opportunity to hang out with Jim Ward, front man for the band Sparta, during their one night visit on their current tour. Richards on Richards was the venue for this evening, and both Rebecca and I had a really great time.

We discuss a variety of topics, ranging from what life on the road is like, the making of the latest album, Jim’s prior experiences with Vancouver, a little bit of politics, and we discover a little more of what life is like in Jim’s hometown of El Paso, Texas. (Note: explicit language)

It was an amazing opportunity for the interview, and the performance that night was nothing short of being absolutely stellar. We take a moment back in “the studio” to reflect on the overall experience and review what we saw on stage that night.

Music featured in this episode is all by Sparta

  • breaking the broken
  • syncope
  • p.o.m.e.
  • the most vicious crime

Aberdeen CityThis episode goes mobile as Rebecca and I spend some time with Aberdeen City before they take the stage at Richards on Richards in Vancouver. They were in town on October 17, 2006 on their North American tour, opening up for Electric Six. Answering an email that Rebecca sent them, they arranged for us to be on the guest list and hang out in the green room before the show started.

We get into a variety of topics, including life on the road, their brief time in Vancouver, what it’s like to tour with Electric six, and so on. The whole atmosphere is very laid back and unscripted. You get to hear the whole interview from beginning to end, with only minor editing to make all the segments flow together. Call it what you want, but this is podcasting. There are no rules. (FYI: some explicit language is used in this episode)

On a technical note, this is my first time using Levelator in an episode. This was very useful with the raw audio that I recorded of the interview. I’ve been impressed with what it can do and recommend checking it out for yourself.

A Skype interview with blogger J.J. Guerrero from the Canucks Hockey Blog, Rebecca and I learn more about the guy behind the blog, why he loves the Vancouver Canucks, and gather some insights about the team. The other interesting thing to note about J.J. is that he worked at GM Place for about nine years as an usher. He has a lot of knowledge about the team other that just loving the guys like we do. We don’t spend a lot of time setting up the episode because it really speaks for itself. If you dig hockey, then you’ll really enjoy this one.

RZ#110 - Vandigicam Flickr Group: Portrait Throw Down Meetup

Photo Credit: Rebecca[flickr:miss604]I was invited to join the Vandigicam Flickr Group on their “Portrait Throw Down III” meetup that gathered in English Bay on August 30, 2006. Vancouver photographer, Rachael Ashe, contacted me with the idea that this event that she was leading would make for interesting podcast material. The location and people apart of the group were an excellent setting for documenting what a Vandigicam gathering is like. Rebecca joined me but participated in the photo-festivities while I ran around with a microphone. Yet another adventure into the people that make up Vancouver, and here is a portion of those people who share a passion for getting behind the lense.

I would love to have linked to everyone’s Flickr accounts that I met at the meetup. Gladly and unfortunately, there were just way too many people to recall nor would it be fair to list the few people I do recall while forgetting the rest. If you were there, feel free to post a comment with a link to your photos. Regardless, it was great meeting everyone!

A Skype interview with blogger Alanah Downie from Vancouver Canucks Op Ed, Rebecca and I find out more about the history of the blog, thoughts on the coming hockey season, and plenty about our favorite team, the Vancouver Canucks. It’s one of our daily stops for the latest news and discussions about the team, so having Alanah on the podcast was a lot of fun and a real treat. We hope it won’t be the last time.

This is another venture using Ubercaster, as well as the first Skype interview in the history of the podcast.
